Overview

ECO-Start stops the engine whenever the vehicle is stationary for more than two seconds if the gearbox is in neutral and the clutch has been released. The engine then restarts automatically when the driver depresses the clutch.
The ECO-Start system is a factory-fitted option available on all Sprinter models with 4-cylinder diesel engines and manual transmission.
Tests conducted by Mercedes-Benz in London showed that fuel usage can be reduced by an average of 6% depending on driving style, traffic density, load weight and vehicle specification. Other independent trials have seen significantly higher fuel savings.
Using less fuel reduces the amount of exhaust and CO² emissions produced an important consideration in built-up areas where air quality is becoming an issue
A quiet cab with no idling engine noise can also help reduce driver fatigue in heavily congested conditions.
A vehicle covering 25,000 miles a year averaging 25mpg could potentially pay back the option cost in fuel savings in less than two years.
